The promise and perils of AI in gaming is most pronounced in narrative, where the emergence of generative AI has the potential to transform the way games tell stories.

Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that can create game assets like 3D models and textures, or even whole worlds, on a massive scale and with incredible realism. Unlike traditional photorealistic games, which use hand-crafted assets that can take years to create, generative AI tools can produce these same assets with far greater speed and accuracy, allowing designers to focus on the creative aspects of their jobs.

Creating Game Economies That React to Player Trends

While developers have long been a bit wary of any AI that is nondeterministic (meaning it might behave differently in different situations), this type of AI is becoming increasingly viable for games. AI that is able to learn and evolve as the game is played can make NPCs more unpredictable and challenging for players, increasing immersion and longevity.

The newest generation of AI for games also incorporates speech-to-text to create more natural-sounding dialogue, and can mimic body gestures to create more realistic animation. Kylan Gibbs, the CEO of Inworld AI, explains that this new technology is being integrated with other types of generative AI to create NPCs that are not only smarter but more expressive as well. He gives the example of Slothtopia, a sloth-themed social simulator, where NPCs interact with players through non-scripted conversations and have highly dynamic movement patterns.
