The foam is sprayed on surfaces from a special rig truck, using a proprietary mix of polyol resin and isocyanate to create polyurethane foam. A professional sprays the liquid foam over a surface that has been thoroughly cleaned and prepped for application, and it quickly dries to an impenetrable seal. The insulated surface is then covered with flashing to guard against water and rain penetration.

Spray foam insulation can be applied to new construction as well as existing houses, commercial structures and pole barns. It is often used during the rough-in stage in new construction to fill in voids where electrical and plumbing wiring will be installed. The insulation can be made of either open or closed cell urethane, with the former being better for the environment because it is free of HFCs that have a global warming potential 3,400 times greater than CO2. Open-cell spray foam also has a low-VOC content.
