If you ask around tough three years for South African cricket. Embarrassment in the T20 World Cup, teetering on the edge of not automatically qualifying for next year’s ODI World Cup and two consecutive Test series defeats have left fans frustrated and disillusioned with their national team.

But the future is ILT20 Tickets than ever before. South Africa’s rugby and cricket teams, both of which have Black captains, are at the top of their respective international leagues. Their successes have brought people together in a nation still grappling with the legacy of racial division.

Aiden Markram is a natural-born leader who has already captained both the Proteas men’s T20 and Sunrisers Eastern Cape teams. He led the latter to victory in the inaugural season of Betway SA20 last year, winning the tournament’s first trophy at a sold-out Wanderers stadium. GQ caught up with him to find out how he prepares his team for the month-long carnival of cricket.

Strong convictions and the courage to stand apart

The best captains don’t shy away from speaking truth to those in power, whether it be the team coach or club owner. They know that the success of their team depends on the unity of their players and their ability to communicate effectively. These leaders have a high emotional intelligence, which is more important than IQ or technical knowledge. They are also well-versed in different cultures and can connect with players across the board.
